Grok Bot usage limits cut by SpaceX

Grok Bot Usage Limits Cut: Why SpaceX Says Costs Were 'Unsustainably High'

Yes, SpaceX deliberately cut Grok Bot usage limits. After subscribers watched their weekly allowance jump to 100% over Halloween weekend, Elon Musk confirmed on X that it was no glitch: "The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue."

What happened to Grok Bot over Halloween weekend

Grok Bot is SpaceX's agentic AI, an AI agent that is separate from the regular Grok chatbot. Over the weekend of October 31 to November 1, some paying users noticed their weekly usage meters had suddenly maxed out, even though they had not been using the bot overnight.

Reports collected by TechCrunch and TechRadar describe jumps from as low as 50% to 100%, from 35% to 78%, and from 70% to 100%. One user on X said they hit the 100% cap four days before their weekly reset, something they normally never did.

On Sunday, November 1, Musk replied to those complaints on X with one line: "The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue." He has not said exactly how the limits changed, or what Grok Bot costs to run.

The key numbers

  • 52%: the share of SpaceX income that comes from AI, according to the company's October filing cited by TechCrunch.
  • $431 million: profit reported by SpaceX's renamed "Super Intelligence" division, which would have been higher without $1.2 billion in one-time costs tied to the Cursor acquisition (TechCrunch).
  • 800,000: paid weekly Grok Bot users in early October, more than double the month before, according to SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell (Forbes).
  • $30 / $100 / $200 per month: the Premium, Super and Ultra tiers. Premium is the minimum for Grok Bot; Super and Ultra come with much higher usage limits (Forbes, citing xAI pricing).
  • $60 billion: what SpaceX paid for the AI coding platform Cursor in August. According to xAI's documentation, Grok and Cursor draw from a shared weekly usage allowance (Forbes).

Why it matters for SpaceX

Only weeks ago Grok Bot was the star of SpaceX's story. Musk called it "the fastest growth of a product that I've ever seen in my life," and on the Q3 earnings call he said users were using it more each week, not less. That is exactly the problem: every extra request costs compute, and a flat $30 subscription does not stretch forever.

SpaceX is not alone. TechRadar notes that OpenAI also quietly tightened usage limits, and heavy users of AI tools can burn through many times their subscription price in compute. With AI now more than half of SpaceX's income, investors will watch closely whether the company fixes the gap with higher prices, lower limits or cheaper compute. Some users were not happy: one Reddit thread called the change an "indirect rug pull."

There is one open question. Cursor reported a billing and usage dashboard problem on the same Sunday and later marked it resolved. Forbes says it is unclear whether that bug caused some of the sudden spikes users saw.

What's next

On the Q3 call, Musk said SpaceX plans to deploy Grok Bot "at scale for enterprise customers," starting with some "trusted customers," with "wide deployment within a few weeks." He also predicted Grok Bot may become the product that uses most of SpaceX's AI compute. In the meantime, he has kept promoting Grok Bot for holiday gift shopping, and in another reply he asked a frustrated user whether upgrading to a higher tier was too expensive. That hints the company would rather move heavy users up to the $100 or $200 plans than raise the base price.

FAQ

Why did my Grok Bot usage limit run out so fast?

SpaceX tightened Grok Bot usage allowances. Musk said the cost of serving Grok Bot was "unsustainably high relative to revenue." A separate Cursor dashboard bug on November 1 may also have caused some false spikes.

How much does Grok Bot cost?

Grok Bot needs at least the $30/month Premium plan. The $100 Super and $200 Ultra plans offer much higher usage limits.

Is Grok Bot the same as Grok?

No. Grok Bot is an AI agent that does tasks for you; Grok is the chatbot. Both belong to SpaceX's AI business.
