Starlink Mobile 5G: SpaceX Taps Qualcomm for Tens of Thousands of U.S. Cell Sites
Share
SpaceX is building its own ground-based 5G network for Starlink Mobile, and Qualcomm will supply the radio and baseband chips for tens of thousands of U.S. cell sites. The multi-year deal was announced on November 4, 2026, with the nationwide rollout set to begin in 2027.
What happened
Qualcomm announced that SpaceX selected it to power the terrestrial side of Starlink Mobile, the phone service SpaceX is building in the United States. Until now, SpaceX's mobile push has centered on satellites talking directly to ordinary smartphones, for example texting through partners such as T-Mobile. This deal moves Starlink onto the ground: classic cell sites, but designed to work together with the satellite constellation as one network.
Starlink senior vice president Michael Nicolls described the goal as the first fully integrated nationwide satellite and terrestrial network, adding: "We shouldn't live in a time where phone calls are still dropping whether you're at home or on-the-go." Qualcomm's Durga Malladi said: "Building a nationwide network demands high performance and power efficiency at every site."
The key numbers
- Tens of thousands of U.S. 5G sites planned in a multi-year rollout.
- 2027: the year deployment is due to start.
- 64T64R: each radio unit uses massive MIMO with 64 transmit and 64 receive antenna paths, so it can aim signals at many phones at once.
- QRU100 and QDU100: the Qualcomm Dragonwing chips inside the radio units and the baseband (distributed unit) processing, plus Qualcomm's physical-layer RAN software.
- About $17 billion: what SpaceX agreed to pay EchoStar in September 2025 for AWS-4 and H-block spectrum licenses (up to $8.5 billion in cash and up to $8.5 billion in SpaceX stock).
Financial terms of the Qualcomm deal were not disclosed, and SpaceX has not said how many sites go live in each phase.
Why it matters
Satellites are great at covering empty places, but dense cities need towers. By pairing its spectrum with its own base station design, SpaceX is laying the groundwork to act as a real mobile carrier rather than only a satellite add-on. SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen has said the goal is to "become a major mobile carrier ... in the United States."
The timing is telling. On November 2, The Washington Post reported that SpaceX is in talks with EchoStar about buying Boost Mobile or using its network, after Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile each turned down Musk's request to run a SpaceX service on their networks. Boost would be a shortcut to customers; the Qualcomm deal is the long-term build. TD Cowen analyst Gregory Williams estimated that building a full network could cost "upwards of $80B" and take years.
Not everyone is convinced it will be easy. Analyst Michael Thelander of SRG Research told RCR Wireless that massive MIMO adds capacity but does not fix a spectrum shortage, and compared the coverage challenge to Dish's struggles with its greenfield 5G network.
What's next
Watch for three things: a decision on Boost Mobile (a purchase or network-access deal could put Starlink Mobile in customers' hands long before 2027), tower agreements (RCR Wireless reports SpaceX is in talks with U.S. tower companies for access to at least 80,000 sites), and the first live sites in 2027. Both companies also pitch the platform as groundwork for AI-native 6G, though the initial rollout is 5G.

FAQ
What is Starlink Mobile?
Starlink Mobile is SpaceX's planned U.S. mobile phone service. It combines Starlink satellites with a new ground-based 5G network of cell sites, so phones can switch between towers and space.
When will Starlink Mobile 5G towers go live?
According to Qualcomm and SpaceX, deployment of the terrestrial 5G network is planned to begin in 2027, with tens of thousands of sites rolled out over several years.
Is SpaceX buying Boost Mobile?
Not confirmed. The Washington Post reported on November 2, 2026 that SpaceX is in talks with EchoStar about buying Boost Mobile or using its network. No deal has been announced.
